The forest understory is an interconnected community of seedlings, saplings, herbs, shrubs, and small trees between the forest canopy and forest floor. This sheltered layer is warm, humid, and protected from harsh winds and extreme sun exposure. As a result, ferns, mosses, and fungi flourish, encouraging nutrient recycling.
